I’m sitting by the side of my sleeping great-grandmother in the ICU. She’s got 93 years under her belt and has outlived most of her friends, her husband, and her only daughter. Last night she had a heart attack and now her respiratory system is failing. She’s got 93 years of experiences, 4 grand-children, 9 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She has lived a full and beautiful life. And yet, if this is really “it”, it still feels too soon!! It’s breaks my heart to hear her say she’s afraid of dying, not because of death, but because of who she will leave behind. And it makes me think about what’s important in life. It’s not succeeding in school or work or being fit or having the latest iPhone. It’s being with the people who you love and who love you. It’s about not taking any relationship for granted because, in just a second, everything could change. It’s always saying “I love you” and forgiveness. It is supporting your loved ones in all that they do and helping them accomplish their goals. It is our tendency to think these things will happen one day in the far far future. But the reality is that these things happen all the time, and to people much younger than my dear GG. So, kiss your family goodnight and remember that love is what life is all about.
