Back in 2009, when I was studying in Prague, I met Daniela, an Austrian girl. We met at a party and then again in our Czech language class. We became friends and she even invited me to come to her home in Austria!
On that trip I visited Vienna, Berg (her hometown), the castle that her mom works at, and Bratislava (Slovakia).
After the semester was up, it was time for Dani to head back to Austria. In February 2010, I visited again, only that time we flew from Bratislava to Rome with her sister Petra!
We were there for three days and were able to see a lot of Rome!
In March, during the time my mom came to live in Prague for a month with me, we visited Dani on the way back from a trip to Hungary!
Dani and her mom showed us their village, the countryside, some ruins nearby, and we had such a great time!
Well, this month, Daniela was finally able to come to the U.S.! On her trip, she visited Chicago, New Orleans, and New York! She brought with her my absolute favorite chocolate: Milka!! I think she had like 4lbs of chocolate in her suitcase for us… Needless to say, we were in heaven! It was so great to see her again and my mom and I were excited to be able to show her our home like she showed us hers.
Here are some of the highlights!
On her first day in NOLA, we had lunch at Mother’s, walked around the French Quarter, enjoyed a lot of street performers, had begniets, and browsed the French Market.
The next day we went on a swamp tour to show her what life is like in our backyard… Haha.
We went to Mardi Gras World to give Dani a little taste of what Carnival is like!
And a Vampire Tour to show her the spooky side of our city!
We also showed Dani how alcohol & music are a huge part of our culture by taking her to the Carousel bar, the casino, the Blue Nile, and Snug Harbor.
On her last day we went sailing to show her how we like to relax!
And then she got a taste of crawfish & raw oysters! I’m pretty sure she thought we were super weird for eating it but she was adventurous and tried our favorite food!
We did a lot in the 6 days that she was in NOLA and I really enjoyed getting to catch up with her after three years of not seeing each other! We Skype every couple of months but it’s so much better to hang out in person.
I’m so happy that we have remained friends after this time and now it’s my turn to get back to Europe for our next adventure!
